Decay Indicator – Cavity Indicator

How is decay detected in a cavity preparation?

Whenever we are placing a filling into a tooth the we want to be 100% certain that all of the decay has been removed. In the past this was done by visual inspection and by feeling the prepared surface with an explorer (the sharp-ended, hooked dental tool) for soft spots. This method can lead to missed spots of decay and a larger filling in the future.

How does decay indicator work?

Decay indicator is a staining solution that only sticks to decay and not clean, undecayed surfaces. It comes in colors that provide a stark contrast to healthy tooth structure. Use of the decay indicator makes complete decay removal simpler and more accurate.
